Leather Horn Wraps

Why wrap a horn with leather instead of rubber? Well, there are a lot of reasons, but the main reason is it allows us to slide rope. Being able to slide rope takes a lot of pressure off of our horses. It allows us to cushion the blow, we don't like our horses getting jerked around. When laying down critters if the header will slide a little bit of rope it makes it a lot easier for the ground crew to tail one down.

When picking a horn wrap the biggest thing you need to consider is how easily do I want to be able to slide rope. Beginners should start with a pretty sticky horn wrap, which makes it so that they wont have to take so many dallies to stop an animal.

At H Bar Saddlery we offer an extensive collection of Horn Wraps. Mule hide (white split) is the old standby for this example we will use it as the standard. We also carry chap leather wraps in a various colors. Chap hide tends to be a little stickier than mule hide and tends to burn through a little quicker. Boar hide on the other hand may be somewhat sticky in the beginning, but it quickly becomes quite slick. Boar hide is also the most durable by far of any of the wraps that we sell. The stickiest leather that we carry is elk hide, but unfortunately it doesn't last very long.

With horn wraps there is always a trade off between stickiness and durability.
