Why Wrap a Horn with Leather Instead of Rubber?

Updated: May 11

Wrapping a horn with leather instead of rubber has several advantages. The primary benefit is that leather allows us to slide rope more effectively. This capability significantly reduces the pressure on our horses. It cushions the impact, which is crucial since we want to avoid jerking our horses around. When we lay down critters, having a header that can slide a bit of rope makes it much easier for the ground crew to tail one down.

Choosing the Right Horn Wrap

When selecting a horn wrap, the most important factor to consider is how easily you want to slide rope. Beginners should opt for a sticky horn wrap. A sticky wrap helps them avoid taking too many dallies to stop an animal. This can make a big difference in their overall experience.

Types of Horn Wraps

At H Bar Saddlery, we offer an extensive collection of horn wraps. Mule hide (white split) is the traditional choice, and for this example, we will use it as the standard. We also carry chap leather wraps in various colors. Chap hide tends to be stickier than mule hide, but it wears out a bit quicker.

Boar hide is another option. It may start off somewhat sticky, but it quickly becomes slick. However, boar hide is the most durable of all the wraps we sell. The stickiest leather we offer is elk hide, but it unfortunately does not last very long.

The Trade-Offs

With horn wraps, there is always a trade-off between stickiness and durability. Choosing the right wrap depends on your specific needs and preferences. If you prioritize stickiness, you might sacrifice some durability. Conversely, if you want something that lasts longer, you may have to deal with less grip.

Conclusion

In conclusion, wrapping a horn with leather instead of rubber offers significant benefits for equestrian riders. It enhances the ability to slide rope, which ultimately helps protect our horses. When selecting a horn wrap, consider your experience level and the type of leather that best suits your needs.
